Fun Drinks To Do With Your Sparkling Water

If you are looking for something fun and delicious recipes for your sparkling water, here are some that you might want to try!

  1. Sparkling Frozen Melon Ball

Here’s a quick and easy idea to give your drinks some fun summer colors and flavor: make melon ball ice cubes.

You need watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, white honeydew melon. Rinse the melons, cut them in half and remove the seeds.

Use a melon baller to scoop out the melon balls from the fruit. Don’t worry if they’re not all perfectly round – they will flatten slightly when you freeze them.

Use a baking sheet or flat platter that can fit in your freezer. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. Arrange the melon balls on the baking sheet. Make sure that the melon balls are not touching (or they will freeze together).

Freeze the melon balls for a few hours or until completely frozen.

Place the melon ball ice cubes in a glass, add sparkling water, a squeeze of lime juice, and a mint leave to garnish. This simple drink not only looks great, but the water will have a delicious hint of melon, lime and mint.

Help, I’m Addicted to Canned and Bottled Soda

“I am addicted to soda. I am a soda junkie. Everyone in my life knows that I am a complete and total soda addict. I can’t just drink one soda. I start with one, sure, but I quickly find I’ve consumed three or four cans back to back.” – A confession from a soda addict.

We all know that canned and bottled soda has no nutritional value, no health benefits, large calorie and sugar content. Each 350 ml soda drink has 140 calories and 39 grams of sugar.

The truth is, most of the soda addict feels that the addiction was not to sugar, or caffeine, or soda at all. The addiction is actually rooted from the good ole carbonation. There is something about bubbles that just makes the drink taste better.

So here’s some tips and tricks to end your suffering.

  1. Get on a soda schedule.

Jot down a schedule for your soda consumption. For example, if you normally drink 3 sodas per day, cut down to 2 per day for an entire month, and then 1 per day the month after. From there, you can gradually cut down even further.

  1. Find a substitute
Make sure your substitute drinks are within reach when you get thirsty. If you just love the tingle of carbonation on your tongue,  keep your cabinets stocked with club soda, or invest in a SodaXpress machine and make it yourself at home.
If you like flavored water, slice up a bunch of oranges, cucumbers or rinse off some berries at the beginning of the week and make a fresh pitcher every morning. The Importance of Staying Hydrated During Work

Many areas of the country have been experiencing extreme heat, and sadly there are news about the lives lost due to heat stroke. While newscasters warn to stay out of the heat, many workers do not have that option. Keeping workers cool and well-hydrated are the best ways to protect them when working in hot environments.  

Risk factors for heat illness

Workers should be made aware of the many risk factors that may affect their heat tolerance. Risk factors that may influence heat illness include high air temperatures and humidity, direct sun exposure, indoor radiant heat sources (ovens, hot manufacturing processes, etc.), limited air movement, physical exertion, not drinking enough fluids (dehydration) and many more. Workers should discuss their individual risk factors with their healthcare provider.  

Staying hydrated

The average person has 2.6 million sweat glands. These glands are activated when a portion of the brain determines that the body needs to be cooled down. Sweat evaporates off our skin which allows for heat loss and cooling. However, when we sweat, we also lose water and electrolytes. Drinking enough water and having enough electrolytes is necessary for our bodies to function properly.

It is recommended that for moderate activity in moderate conditions, each worker should drink 1 cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes. Workers should be reminded to drink water frequently before becoming thirsty in order to maintain good hydration.

Dehydration Can Affect Mood

Not drinking enough water isn’t just bad for health; it can affect behavior as well. Studies have shown that even slight levels of dehydration can have a negative impact on people’s mood. Obviously, people who are feeling irritable are less likely to get along with co-workers or get their work done, and probably won’t want to even be at work in the first place. When employees have access to plenty of water, it can drastically improve people’s moods and make work a more pleasant environment to be in.

This would be the most frequent questions asked by people around the world. Is the bubbly beverage just as good for your body as the plain water?

Basically, YES! “Sparkling water can be just as hydrating as regular water,” according to Jennifer McDaniel, a registered dietitian and certified specialist in sports dietetics.

Carbonated water seems like a great alternative for people who don’t like the taste of water, but want to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Sparkling water is made by dissolving carbon dioxide in water, creating carbonic acid. This process just adds bubbles — it does not add sugar, calories, or caffeine. Tonic water, club soda, and mineral water are all types of sparkling water, but these have added sodium, vitamins, or sweeteners, so it’s important to read the label.

There are some common health concerns associated with drinking sparkling water — for instance, that it leaches calcium from the bones, causes kidney stones, and strips the enamel from your teeth — but these are not supported by clinical research. The confusion may arise because of research that found a connection between carbonated cola drinks and low bone mineral density.

While artificially carbonated water is slightly more acidic than still water, it’s not as acidic as sugary sodas, and does not seem to significantly damage tooth enamel. A 2001 study published in the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation that compared the effect of sparkling mineral waters with still waters on human teeth, noted that the “carbonation of drinks may not be an important factor per se in respect of erosive potential.”

Last week we talked about how sparkling water can make you and your house look flawless for Hari Raya. Today we will explore more on how we can use sparkling water in our cooking.

3. Cooking and Baking

During Hari Raya, we want to serve food that is delicious, fluffy, juicy and pretty for our loved ones. Bihun Soup is a must have during Hari raya which is usually served with side dished such as shredded chicken breast, various boiled vegetables and sambal. When it comes to cooking vegetables, sparkling water has proven to be effective in decreasing oxidation and the denaturing of chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments, helping to preserve the vegetables’ color. What’s more, sparkling water also appears to soften vegetables. Cooking times can be decreased, allowing you to better preserve more of the vegetables’ vitamin content.

Other than that, sparkling water can also be used in baking. The carbon dioxide in sparkling water helps to rise the dough which makes it fluffy. The lightening effect of sparkling water in dough happen when the bubbles create pockets of air (trapping water droplets in the process) that expand under heat, giving the final product a lighter texture.

4. Make Drinks

Last but not least, sparkling water can be used to make various fun and delicious drinks to serve your guests during Hari Raya. Fizzy Ribena

 

 

Pour Ribena syrup in a cup/jug. Add in sparkling water and ice and it is ready to be serve. You can replace the syrup with any flavor of your liking.

Simply mix rose syrup with water, then stir in evaporated milk, mixing well. Add sparkling water and stir to combine. Pour into glasses over ice cubes and serve. You can make it more interesting by adding ice cream or grass jelly.

Sparkling Fruit Juice

 Add a twist to your normal, dull fruit juice by adding some sparkling fun and that way you can surprise your guests. Simply add sparkling water to your fruit juice by 1:1 ratio and add some ice cubes.

Hari Raya Puasa marks the end of a month of fasting for Muslims. It is a day of joyous celebrations. Muslims celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, or also known as Hari Raya Puasa, to conclude the Ramadan holy month of fasting. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is regarded as a merry celebration as it marks a person’s triumph and success on discipline and self-resistance which symbolizes refinement and rebirth.
When the new moon is seen on the evening of the last day of Ramadan, the fasting period comes to an end. Such sightings are made by religious officials at various hilltops throughout the country and when the crescent moon is seen, the following day marks the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Those working in the cities will return to their hometowns (balik kampung) and reunite with their parents, relatives and old friends in the celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Although the cities start to be populated again at the end of the week, the celebration doesn’t end there as one month of Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations follow a month of fasting. People continue visiting each other’s homes and throwing open houses and get the opportunity to catch up with friends and family while indulging in the various delicacies!

The fasting doesn’t deter the celebrants from making preparations to welcome Hari Raya Aidilfitri. The excitement builds up way before the first day, sometimes as early as when Ramadan starts where families start to shop for new clothes, delicacies and goodies and furnish their home with new furniture and decoration weeks. Brightly-colored lights, in the common hues of green, yellow and gold, can be seen adorning the mosques and the offices of government agencies.
Surprisingly, there are a few uses of sparkling water that will help you in your preparation towards Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

1. WASH FACE

 

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a time of gathering with friends and family, so it is also a time when you’d want to look your very best and wow those around you. To me skin is the most crucial elements in making sure that you will look your very best on Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Originated from Japan and later became popular in Korea, it is said to come with several benefits, including firming and tightening up the skin, removing dead skin cells, and purifying the pores. Aside from doing away with dirt and grime, the bubbles in the beverage are known to deliver oxygen to the skin’s barrier, which can tone down puffy areas for a smoother, suppler look.
Setting it up is easy; all you have to do is fill a bowl with one part carbonated water and mix it with an equal amount of regular H20 (this will dilute some of the fizziness so that it’s not too harsh on the skin). Doing it while fasting makes it even harder. Sparkling water surprisingly can act as an inexpensive, natural cleaning agent. This versatile product can be used on a variety of surfaces throughout your home, and eliminates the need for harsh chemicals. It is easy to clean with sparkling water since the “fizz” does most of the work for you.
  1. Clean sticky spots on floors. Instead of scrubbing, pour a small amount of carbonated water onto stubborn spots and simply wipe dry.
 
  1. Pour or spray soda water on laundry, carpet and upholstery The bubbling action will lift the stain to the surface of the fabric so you can blot it out easily. Repeat as needed.
 
  1. Shine kitchen and bathroom fixtures with carbonated water. It’s an especially good option for chrome, but also works wonders on counter tops and sinks. Just spray and wipe.
 
  1. De-grease cooking pans. Pour some soda water into cooking and baking pans while they are still warm and watch the fizz dissolve the grease and lift baked-on food. Finish by washing pans as usual.
 
  1. Wash the windows throughout your home or in your car with sparkling water. Fill a spray bottle with sparkling water, and spray onto glass just as you would with a conventional cleaning product. Wipe the glass with paper towel until it is dry, for a streak-free shine.

Planning to Drink an Entire Liter of Water During Iftar? Better Don't.

Thirst is something that almost everyone experiences while fasting. Although we try to hydrate ourselves during sahoor, it is usually of no avail come midday. And as the hot weather persist, so do perspiration and need for water. But going without such a vital element of our lives for an entire month can take a toll on our bodies.

Since the body continuously loses water during digestion, breathing, perspiration and the likes, it is highly important to have a steady intake of fresh water in your body to keep your organs normal.

Dr Mashraib Jillani, a general physician at Al-Atta Clinic, spoke on an important issue, which pertains to something that we all do while breaking our fast – that is, drinking too much water at once.

When you drink a lot of water, the sodium levels in your blood drop; sodium is supposed to keep the fluids in your body balanced. But when the water level in the blood increases rapidly, the sodium goes inside the cell from the blood and causes your cells to swell up. While this swelling is generally very harmful, however, if it occurs inside the brain cells, it can be fatal. The condition in which this happens is called hyponateremia. Symptoms include confusion, headaches, nausea and bloating – these symptoms are often confused with dehydration. In serious cases, hyponatremia can prompt seizures, organ disappointment and even demise.

Drinking too much water will also cause you to urinate a lot. In this case your body will not absorb as much water as it will excrete. The body has a natural mechanism when it comes to excessive water intake; the kidneys expel all the extra water that is not needed at that time, which leads to your body having less water even after you have drank a lot.

It is advised to take two glasses of water at once and then continue after eating and praying. Water should be taken regularly in the time between iftar and sahoor so that it is stored in your body for the next day.

Here are some drinks to beat dehydration during Ramadan

1. Dates & Milk

Dates & milk are traditionally eaten right after the sunset call to prayer, when Muslims break the fast. Muslims begin their Iftar by consuming the dried dates, which are put in milk overnight, in adherence to the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed, who also broke his fast this way.

2. Karkadeh

Refreshing hot or cold with a color that is as intense as the flavor, Karkadeh is a sweet infusion made from hibiscus flower. With a hearty Iftar meal the cold version is preferred.

3. Tamarind or Tamer Hindi

Tamarind also known in Arabic as “Tamr Hendi”, or Indian date is very popular in Arabic countries. Tamer Hindi is a very sour drink that is considered as the twin of Hibiscus as it is made almost in the same way. It is made of tamarind fruit mixed with sugar and water.

HOW TO STAY HYDRATED?

  1. Break fast every night with one or two glasses of water and a few dates. Breaking the fast with dates is not only Sunnah; dates also help with hydration since they are a natural source of glucose, which encourage your cells to store fluid and fuel for energy.

 

  1. Do not add too much salt to the dishes. Also avoid eating salty foods like salted fish and pickles as they increase the body’s need for water.

So during iftar, make a salad with tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. Make smoothies for sahur with hydrating ingredients like watermelon or strawberries.

Move to Sparkling Water!

Last week we discussed on how soda causes harm to your kids. If your kids enjoy drinking soda so much that they can’t keep their hands off it no matter how hard you want them to, the healthiest way is by switching to SPARKLING WATER!

So now, let me provide you 10 reasons why you and your kids should switch to sparkling water.

Sparkling water (also known as carbonated water, club soda, soda water, seltzer water, or fizzy water) is water into which carbon dioxide gas under pressure has been dissolved. Some of these have additives such as sodium (seltzer water is almost always composed of water and carbon dioxide with no other additives). This process, known as carbonation, is a process that causes the water to become sparkling. Most sparkling water is sold in ready to drink bottles as mineral water and carbonated beverages such as soft drinks. However, it is rather easy to prepare at home with soda makers.

 

  1. Sparkling water = Regular water

Sparkling water, first and foremost, is just as efficient at hydrating the body as plain tap or mineral water. Because of its distinctive flavor, one tends to drink more soda water as well, which overall is beneficial in and of itself. With the extreme heat we are experiencing today, opting for soda water may just offer a solution to stay hydrated.

"If somebody doesn't like the taste of water, they shouldn't be concerned if sparkling is all they're drinking," said Manhattan-based nutritionist Keri Gans, RDN, CND. "Sparkling water is just as hydrating. All it is is added carbonation."

 

  1. Treats constipation

Sparkling water consumption may also aid those with impaired digestion as well as those who are predisposed to gallstones formation. In a study published on the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, patients suffering from constipation were divided into two groups, with one group made to drink carbonated water while the other with tap water for more than two weeks. Those who drank soda water reported improved overall digestion and gallbladder emptying and lesser incidence of constipation.

 

  1. No calcium depletion

But if sparkling water doesn’t damage your stomach, how about your bones?  Does it weaken them? Again, the evidence so far suggests not. A Creighton University Osteoporosis Research Center study, for instance, has proven that sparkling water consumption does not result in the leaching of calcium to the urine. A Tufts University study, on the other hand, has established that it isn’t the carbonation but instead the use of the phosphoric acid in commercial soft drinks that causes low bone mineral density.

  1. Prevent overeating

If you drink a lot of sparkling water you might find you feel bloated, but researchers in Japan have found that this side-effect could be put to good use. They had a group of women fast overnight and then slowly drink either still or sparkling water. They found that 900ml of gas was released from just 250ml of water, so not surprisingly the women’s stomachs distended slightly and the had the perception of feeling full, even though they hadn’t eaten. They didn’t feel uncomfortable and so fizzy water has been suggested as a way of avoiding overeating, because it makes you feel fuller.

  1. Low dental erosion

Sparkling water has long been vilified as one of the culprits that cause dental erosion. While it is true that sparkling water has erosive properties, its dental effects prove highly negligible as was proven in a University of Birmingham study. In the study, it was found that sparkling water’s erosive capacity is still one hundred times lower than that of commercially available sweetened soda and pop drinks. It turns out the sugar content as well as the type of acidity regulator used, which in the case of most sodas is phosphoric acid, are the ones to blame for dental erosion and not carbonation itself.

  1. It Relieves Upset Stomach

Some sodas and sparkling water can help relieve stomach problems, such as nausea and indigestion. In a study conducted on people who drank carbonated water and regular water, it was found that those who drank carbonated water experienced reduced indigestion. Many people rely on sodas and non-caffeinated beverages to reduce nausea as well.

  1. Carbonation and cellulite

Cellulite is what happens when fat cells push against the connective tissue beneath your skin. Your age, genetic make-up, and thickness of your skin all factor into whether you will develop cellulite and, if so, how much you have. If you're still thinking sparkling water is bad for you, it's not, and it doesn't result in cellulite. What will contribute to cellulite is the inevitable weight you’ll put on if you drink too many sugary sodas.

  1. Cost-efficient
