The addictive properties of soda come from a number of its ingredients–first, the caffeine. Caffeine causes children to be addicted to soda, and some might be more susceptible to caffeine’s effects due to their smaller body weight.

Those who drink soda regularly are also more likely to get less than the recommended amount of vitamin A, calcium, and magnesium, an important mineral to overall health.

When a kid drinks soda, they are consuming chemicals that can alter their brain. MSG can be presence in the citric acid of soda, as well as in the artificial flavors. According to a survey of more than 3000 mothers, children who drank soda were more aggressive, withdrawn, and had trouble paying attention.

Sugar isn’t good for teeth, and neither are the acids within soda. Both the citric acid and phosphorus can wear away tooth enamel and lead to decay.

Mice fed artificial sweeteners, like aspartame found in diet sodas, developed glucose intolerance, which can be an early sign of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. What’s more frightening, is simply drinking soda in moderation may not reduce the risk. As little as one single 12 ounce can of soda a day can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 22%.


  1. Kids who like the sweetness of soda are more likely to be overweight

A two year study of 3-5 year olds determined that the consumption of sugary beverages significantly increased the likelihood of childhood obesity. In addition, children who developed a preference for fatty or sweet foods were more inclined to be overweight. Even choosing diet soda to avoid sugar won’t prevent this, because aspartame increases sugar cravings by telling the brain to consume more.

  1. Soda can lead to heart disease

When we are talking about children, heart disease rarely comes up in the conversation. However, with the news that just one soda a day can increase the risk of a cardiovascular event by 61%, it’s a conversation worth having. That same amount of soda is also linked to a 19% increase in heart disease. Considering the risk of a soda dependence, children who begin drinking soda are more likely to consume it regularly. Over the span of their lifetime they will consume far more soda than someone who began drinking it in adulthood, increasing their risks.

10. Soda can inhibit digestion

Soda and caffeine are diuretics and can lead to dehydration, especially if soda is replacing water. Sugar and caffeine can increase the level of acids in the stomach leading to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Carbonation is also a common IBS trigger, as it results in more gas.

The Weird Way Soda Messes Your DNA

We all know that sugary soda is a major contributor to obesity– a typical 20-ounce drink can have up to 18 teaspoons of sugar and more than 240 calories. What we didn’t know is that regular soda consumption might also destroy your DNA.

The study, undertaken by researchers at the University of California San Francisco and recently published in the American Journal of Public Health, examined 5,309 US adults aged between 20 and 65. The team looked closely at telomeres, which are the protective DNA caps on the end of chromosomes in cells that protect your genetic data, and discovered a link between the ingestion of sugary soda and the shortening of telomeres in white blood cells.


Short telomeres limits cell regeneration and have been linked to a range of chronic infirmities such as heart disease, diabetes, and various types of cancer.

In fact, by analyzing single samples of the participants’ telomeres, the researchers estimated that drinking a 20-ounce (oz.) soda every day would translate to an extra 4.6 years of aging. That’s similar to the effects caused by smoking. The finding was consistent regardless of age, race, income or education level.

How’d they get there? It might be because sugary sodas cause a rapid influx of liquid calories into your blood stream, which can raise your insulin levels. This spike can increase oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and inflammation—all things known to influence telomere shortening, says study author Cindy Leung, Sc.D.

But when the researchers lumped all sugar-sweetened drinks together—sodas and noncarbonated beverages like fruit drinks or energy drinks—they didn’t find any significant association with shortened telomeres. It’s only when they teased out the fizzy stuff that the link emerged.

However, the previous studies have shown no difference in how your body responds to sodas and non-bubbly beverages, says Leung. The researchers think that the sugar consumption might only affect your telomeres once it reaches a certain level. Back when the study data was collected 15 years ago, people only consumed an average of 4 oz. of noncarbonated sugary drinks a day, compared to 12 oz. for sugary soda.

“We think if we were to repeat the study again now, we would find a similar association with non-carbonated sugary beverages,” says Leung.

How Much Water Should I Drink?

Parents should make sure that children and teens are getting adequate hydration throughout the day. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children drink plenty of fluids before starting any exercise and continue to drink during physical activities.

During exercise, the AAP suggests drinking about 3-8 ounces of water every 20 minutes for children and 34-50 ounces per hour for adolescent.

Athletes need to take precautions to avoid dehydration. It is recommended to drink 16 ounces one hour prior to exercise, 4-8 ounces every 15 minutes during exercise, and another 16 ounces an hour after exercise. The amounts can vary depending on your personal response, heat index, and the type of activities. An easy indication is, if you are sweating - you are losing waters.

How can you tell if you're getting enough fluids during the day? You can tell by checking your urine color and output. If you're urinating every two to four hours, the output is light-colored, and there's significant volume, then you're probably well-hydrated.

How can you tell if you're dehydrated? You might feel tired, cranky, moody, or have a headache. As the body gets dehydrated, the heart has to work harder to pump blood through the vessels.

According to Erin Palinski, RD, CDE, LDN, CPT, registered dietitian and the author of Belly Fat Diet for Dummies,: YES! She says, "Sparkling water certainly counts when you are aiming for eight glasses of water per day as this is just water with added carbonation. Fluids rich in sugar—such as juice or caffeine—are less hydrating due to water losses in digestion of calories/sugar as well as the diuretic properties of caffeine, but sparkling water contains no calories/sugar and is caffeine-free, making it a great way to hydrate."

There are subtle differences between sparkling water. Some are carbonated water, while others are often marked as "mineral water", which often have added sodium. Adding Excitement to Your Daily Water Intake

You would immediately want to jump on the next training, and then looking forward to the next achievement. I would like to emphasize the importance of taking care of your body in order to run faster, better and longer!


We can’t stop talking about hydration, because that’s really the main factor. Technology has now made it possible for us to use tools to remind ourselves amidst our busy schedule. I took a stroll around the big World Wide Web and found the following tools to be exceptionally useful.

Based on few simple questions asked on your physique, body hydration level and activities, the tool suggests a recommended intake of water to be consumed.

I am practising that now, I prepare my version of hydration beverage in a regular water bottle and I carry that with me, at work, at meetings or even going to the gym. It gets bored on certain days, and I get that crave for carbonated canned drinks. So I add a little excitement to my hydration beverage. Bubbles, sparkles, gas – whatever you call it. Please raise your hand if you are guilty of feeding your body with lots of food, yet “starving” it with insufficient intake of water!

The good news is, you are not alone. Thanks to the run organizers these days, to help  – who would always prepare bottled water and isotonic beverage for the runners when you crossed the finishing line.  To me, that’s really the most valuable finisher medal!!

I am guilty of not drinking much water thereafter. It’s always an amazing feeling after finishing a run – and I usually spend the rest of the day indulging in this amazing feeling. In actual fact, there’s way too much fluid lost during the workout and replenishing them is very important!

 Here’s my very own 3-steps approach to stay hydrated after a big run!

  1. Weigh FIRST

I now hop on the scale in the morning before I go for the run, and after exercise, I weigh myself again. For each 500g lost during activity, I will drink 2 big glasses of water (That is approximately 500ml). Drinking 2 cans of isotonic drinks do the trick too. But, 2 cans of isotonic drinks contain way too much sugar my body needs – therefore, I replaced that with my own DIY version using lemon, ginger and homemade sparkling water.

WHY lemon and ginger?

  • Lemons are good source of electrolytes, such as potassium, calcium and magnesium, which help hydrate the body and regulate its functioning
  • Ginger is well-known as an anti-inflammatory and for its gastric properties that assist the digestive system.

Most importantly, lemon in combination with ginger provides a “thermogenic” effect that helps activate the metabolism, making it a potent fat and calorie-burner. I want my body to continue burning fat, even when I am not running. Come on, who doesn’t want love that?


  1. EAT fruits NEXT

Many fruits are a great source of both electrolytes and fluids, though the dose of electrolytes can differ from fruit to fruit.  Runners usually also receive one banana as part of their “goodie bag” in completing the run. Bananas have high levels of electrolyte potassium, making it a perfect option for re-fuelling after workout too.

I also munch on high water-content fruits, usually I eat watermelon and strawberries. Do you know that both these fruits contain 92 percent water?

  1. FINALLY, check the toilet.

YES – IT IS TRUE!! SIMPLE, EFFECTIVE WAY to check whether what you have done/drank so far is good enough. Your body signals you through the colour of your urine.

When properly hydrated, urine should be pale yellow in colour. Dark yellow urine may indicate dehydration. Fret not, it’s not the end, all you need to do is, repeat step 1 & 2.

Many exercise nowadays focus on the body very few people focus on the simple and easy exercise – “Face” 

  • Raise your eyebrows as high as you can and hold them for five seconds.
  • Open your mouth as wide as possible and stick your tongue out as far as you can and hold for a few seconds.
  • Using your three center fingers, press down on your cheeks and smile as hard as you can to raise your cheek muscles against your fingers.
  • Move your nose as much as you can from side to side.
  • Lift your eyebrows as high as you can, open your eyes as wide as possible and frown at the same time.
  • Pucker your lips out as far as possible into the shape of an "O." Then change your expression into a wide smile. Repeat several times.
  • Sit in a comfortable chair and look up at the ceiling. Pucker your lips and stick your tongue out as far as possible to exercise your neck muscles
